"Things I Learned" - Series 5 Episode reviews by Joanne Flood
Things I learned in episode 5.1: A Lethal Combination. Originally Broadcast September 17, 2017
1. Lucien and Jean are engaged.
2. Matthew wonders, as we all do, what took so long.
3. Jack Beazley is not keen on the engagement- no surprise there.
4. Jean has a new, softer hairdo, which apparently gives her a new softer personality, or vice versa.
5. Jean now wears pants. 6. Jean's father was a farmer, but probably not a member of PETA.
7. Matthew may be staying with Lucien and Jean for a while.
8. Rose and Charlie had a secret affair.
9. Rose needs to learn the difference between what her lover tells her in confidence and what she should put in a newspaper story.
10. Lucien boxed at some point in his life. I'm guessing at college.
11. Alice has a new hairdo, which seems to have softened her a little, too, but happily she still has that quirky personality.
12. Alice does not like unsolicited touching. Funny line, but no surprise there. She was abused as a child and was visibly uncomfortable when Lucien briefly touched her hands in the Mortal Coil episode.

Things I learned in Episode 5.2: Sorrow Songs – Originally Broadcast Sept. 24, 2017
1. Lucien has a new pair of pjs and a new overcoat.
2. Jean has a new robe, no more appealing than the pink one, but apparently it doesn't put Lucien off. (See Craig's interview re Viking helmets.)
3. There's a little bit of tension between Bill and Charlie, but none noticeable between Bill and Lucien.
4. When standing over a dead body, Alice is just as funny as ever, but she's not taking dancing lessons.
5. Alice is adjusting to unsolicited touching. She doesn't cringe when McHandsy Lucien puts his hand on her back.
6. New cultural subtext - prejudice against Gypsies.
7. Charlie forgave Rose.
8. People are having sex at the Blake house, but it's not Lucien and Jean. (See #7.)
9. Edward Tyneman may not be as evil as I thought - nice to Rose at the end.
10. Patrick Tyneman knows about the engagement and is actually very sweet to Jean about it.
11. No sign of Matthew at the Blake house.
12. Patrick has angina.
13. The ring - it's not Lucien's mother's ring. Is it Christopher's? That would be weird. We need an explanation! Sometimes, I think the writers are playing with us.
14. Lucien still makes sciency messes for Jean to clean up, but happily he does it in a white shirt sans vest. Sigh.
15. Jean belongs to the Ballarat film society, apparently a more progressive bunch than the Church sewing circle.
16. Pine bark is used by the more progressive ladies in the film society for the "change" and by their husbands for ED. We don’t think Lucien needs it.
17. Jean has a new nightie, which, unfortunately, she did not put to good use.
18. Jean's not good at hiding or making excuses for why she's lurking in the hallway in her nightgown. Knitting, really?
19. Jean goes to confession. Looks like those years of Catholic catechism are paying off, and we were right about the impure thoughts.

Things I learned in Episode 5.3: The Call of the Void. Originally Broadcast October 1, 2017
1. Jean has found or been around so many murder victims that she barely gasps when she finds one in the freezer during her dinner date.
2. Alice gets a thrill at the thought of watching a dead body thaw in slow motion.
3. Jean broke pottery in the interest of science.
4. Jean invited someone to board without asking Lucien.
5. Jean and Lucien reversed roles. (See 3 and 4.)
6. The writers are fans of Alfred Hitchcock and/or Roald Dahl. Ref.: Lamb to the Slaughter.
7. Sometimes, Lucien calls Jean “Jeannie” and for some reason, that makes me teary eyed. I love the writers.
8. Lucien doesn't always wash his hands after handling raw meat. Possible storyline?
9. Rose is the daughter of Matthew's sister.
10. Charlie's not good at checking alibis.
11. The Ballarat police acquired waders since season 1, but aren't we all happy that Lucien didn't have them in that first episode?
12. Criminals in Ballarat should be careful about leaving buttons at the crime scene. (Ref. Ep. 2.1)
13. Bill Hobart knows about Rose and Charlie.
14. Jean needs to be careful about leaving castor oil around pregnant teenage girls.
15. Is it me, or does Jean cook rabbit a lot? Maybe she's just given up on having a roast that doesn't wind up as a forensic science experiment.
16. Bill's assault on the dead guy was never addressed.
17. Jean and Lucien say "life is too short" a lot, guess they're foreshadowing the fifth episode.
18. The whole gossip theme was beautifully handled, and I'm glad Jean has decided to ignore the gossips and not let other people tell her how to live.
19. Surprise person at the door in 5.3 was so much better than the one in 4.3.
20. Rose may have to find a new way of sneaking into Charlie's room, one where she doesn't run into Uncle Matthew.

Things I learned in Episode 5.4: All She Leaves Behind. Originally Broadcast October 8, 2017
1. Alice has a sister, but doesn't know where she is. Oh, the plot possibilities!
2. Alice calls Lucien ”Lucien” in the lab. I guess she's done it before. I just remember her being more formal.
3. Lucien offers to help Alice with preparing the instruments before the autopsy. That seems like a first.
4. I didn't know people could be charged with attempted suicide.
5. “Beware of the dog” sign and dog house, but no dog - could be a clue.
6. A man of that era not removing his hat indoors - could be a clue.
7. Lucien says Jean can open his personal mail. Aww. They're so married.
8. Cop with the Buddy Holly glasses makes another brief appearance. Rumor has it a cop will be killed in the precinct. Could he be the one? Some also think it could be Ned.
9. Church ladies in Australia are just as uncharitable as church ladies all over the world.
10. Jean wears a mantilla in church. In the U.S., that was popularized by the Kennedy's.
11. Alice seems to be finding excuses to show up at the station.
12. Lucien doing pt with Matthew. Doesn't seem to be working.
13. Lucien has three grounds to file for divorce: a. He abandoned Mei Lin. He rejects that because it's patently false. b. He committed adultery. He doesn't want to do that because people would assume it's Jean. c. He was an abusive drunk.
14. Lucien picks the one that will ruin his life. (Also, ref episode where Munro threatens Lucien's medical license because of his drinking.)
15. Lucien promises Jean he will not do anything without consulting her, but we know he will.
16. Interestingly, an annulment hasn't even been mentioned. Do they think they have to wait until he's divorced?
17. Charlie and Rose somehow manage to get up to his bedroom, and we get to see the bedroom.
18. Charlie bounces on the bed. No, it's not a euphemism. He actually bounces on the bed when he sits on it.
19. Lucien does more sciency stuff with Jean.
20. Lucien is back to inviting people to dinner without asking Jean first. I hope somebody helped with clean up.
21. Charlie gives Lucien's scotch to a prisoner. Maybe it's Charlie's life that's in danger.
22. Spoiler alert on the motive - killing someone's dog is justifiable homicide in my book.
23. Please tell me I'm not the only one who looked up Pius XII's Allocution to Doctors on the Moral Problem of Analgesia.

Things I learned in Episode 5.5: Measure Twice. Originally broadcast Oct. 15, 2017
1. Ned reappears. Being set up as the cop killed?
2. At family dinners, Matthew sits at the foot of the table with his napkin tucked in his shirt collar.
3. Jean was pregnant when she married Christopher, but not with Christopher, Jr.
4. Jean thinks she miscarried her first baby as a punishment for premarital sex. Explains a lot. She has to be the guiltiest Catholic on the planet.
5. Is #4 the secret that will be in the newspaper and that Rose is suspected of betraying?
6. Matthew's sister's name is Vera, and she's two years younger.
7. Matthew's father was a gambler who abused his wife and children. Explains a lot.
8. Father Emery tells Jean that she cannot be married in the Church because Lucien is divorced. Guess this means Lucien and Mei Lin were married in a religious ceremony.
9. If she does marry Lucien, she will be spiritually ostracized - no confession or Communion - not to mention the looks from those old biddies. But she will have Lucien. I know which choice I’d make.
10. In the Ep. 8 press release, it says Jean is excommunicated. Why at that point? Hmmm....dare we hope?
11. I suspect that Jean's crisis of faith theme is going to play out until Episode 8.
12. Matthew seems to know Rose and Charlie have a relationship.
13. We found out where the bathrooms are in the bake shop. Still unsure about the Blake house location.
14. Jean has sunglasses.
15. Jean keeps fidgeting with the engagement ring, making both Lucien and me concerned.
16. Jean and Lucien do science again.
17. Alice got over being annoyed that Lucien started the autopsy without her and can’t wait to hear the details of how Lucien saved his own life by sticking a pen in his chest. Alas, not saved by the gypsy charm.
18. Lucien has to operate. Lucien in scrubs. Enough said.
19. In his hospital bed, Lucien tells Jean he has something to tell her...dramatic pause...he's a terribly dreadful patient. The writers are playing with us.
20. Jean is being watched.
21. It seems as though a lot of people in Ballarat have burns that Lucien has to tend to.
22. Lucien sees a shadowy figure just as he passes out.
23. Is the watcher and shadowy figure Munro?
24. Is the shadowy figure the one who called the police and not the neighbors?
25. Or maybe Munro is living in the vacant house next door to the crime scene, so he is the neighbor. Nah, probably overthinking that one.
26. If the shadowy figure is Munro, he had the perfect opportunity to kill Lucien. Maybe he’s been redeemed. Nah, he’s too evil.
27. Coming attractions confirm Lucien's dreadful patient assessment.

Things I learned in Ep. 5.6: First Dance. Originally Broadcast October 22, 2017
1. Patrick Tynemann emcees the debutante ball at Wendouree Grammar. Wish we'd seen more of Patrick this season, but behind-the-scene shots suggest he will make more of an appearance in 5.8 and the telemovie. Too bad it isn't because he's charged with filicide.
2. Everyone seems to be more casually dressed this episode. Lucien actually leaves the house in an open neck shirt and cardigan and without his fedora! Pretty daring.
3. Opening scene in Blake house is domestic bliss - Jean knitting, Matthew reading the paper, and Lucien complaining about rest and relaxation and doing a poor job of playing the piano. Later in the episode, Rose kisses Lucien on the cheek. Everything is lovely until that final scene and the previews. More later.
4. Lucien brightens up when Matthew lets him get involved in this week's homicide, albeit remotely. So sweet that Matthew looks to Jean for permission. Everyone knows who is in charge.
5 Alice does the autopsy remotely with Charlie's help. Lucien takes notes on an anatomy chart he has handy.
6. The household is awoken in the dark early morning hours. It's Alice, gleeful that she has the autopsy report. The folks in their pjs don't seem quite as excited.
7. Jean goes with Lucien to the morgue. Turns out not to be her thing.
8. Lucien puts a hot iron on his leg to try and replicate a burn mark and doesn't flinch. Hmm...
9. Lucien isn't supposed to see patients for another week, but makes an exception for the mother of a suspect. Jean just rolls her eyes.
10. Matthew remarks that he wouldn't know what teenage girls are like. (Ref.: See episode 2.2, The Food of Love.) I can't help but think there's more to this story. The writers seem to like parallels (lost daughters - Lucien, Jean, Mathew?), and this is the second time Matthew has said this.
11. Jean has a side business - dressmaking! And, she went to a debutante ball as a teenager.
12. Rose is bitten by a spider at the site of the debutante ball, and Lucien sneaks out with her to investigate the site. Shout out to "Carrie" with something hanging overhead, not to mention bullying girls and distant parents.
13. The florist went to see Psycho. Nice touching mentioning that moviegoers weren't allowed in if the movie had begun. Here's the notice that went out at the time: "We won't allow you to cheat yourself. You must see Psycho from the very beginning. Therefore, do not expect to be admitted into the theatre after the start of each performance of the picture. We say no one - and we mean no one - not even the manager's brother, the President of the United States, or the Queen of England (God Bless her)!“ Other fun fact about Psycho - it was black and white because the studio didn't believe in it and only budgeted $1 million. Other TDBM reference to a Hitchcock film - Vertigo, ep. 2. 5, Crossing the Line. TDBM references Hitchcock TV show - lamb as murder weapon in Ep. 5.3.
14. Rose has a chat with her friend, the teacher Kim Fox. Kim knows all about Charlie and apparently was going to give Rose a contact for an abortion. Can't help but think there's more to this Rose pregnancy story line.
15. When Kim Fox visits Rose at the Courier, we see some Courier headlines framed in the background. I particularly enjoyed: "U.S. Troops - Overpaid - Oversexed - Over here!"
16. A few times during the episode, Lucien pops pills, painkillers one assumes. Maybe Keith Morrisey is drugging him. (Ref. Ep. 1.1)
17. Jean sees Lucien sneaking back in with blood on his shirt - he's popped his stitches. She tells him she's not his mother (probably a surprise to Lucien), and she accepts him for who he is, she just wants him not to lie to her. Lucien looks guilty. Jean takes his vest off and says she's going to be his wife. We wish she would go further. Uncharacteristically, Lucien doesn't kiss her, just looks even guiltier. Uh oh. OH, WAIT! SHE’S SAYS SHE’S GOING TO BE HIS WIFE. SHE’S CHOSEN HIM OVER THE CHURCH!
18. Charlie, the sweetie that he is, can't understand deliberate cruelty, but does drive the victim's father to attempt suicide. But, that's ok, because we get a poignant scene with Lucien talking about how he dealt with losing his wife and daughter. He says that during the war, he volunteered for every dangerous assignment. (This surprised me because at that point he should have been hopeful they were still alive, but would like to hear more about Lucien the war hero.) He also says he tried to drink himself to death. 😥 But, he's glad he survived because it's possible to find a life again. 🙂
19. In another domestic bliss scene, Jean is reading, Lucien is looking at a notebook at the table, and Charlie is watching Game of Champions. (Ref. e.p 1.8 of the same name.) Lucien offers to show Charlie and Jean a fun algebraic formula. He's such a lovable dork. But he finds a clue in the notebook instead.
20. The last scene is painful. Jean again brings up being honest with each other, and Lucien has a flashback to mailing an envelope to the Melbourne Magistrate's Court. Must be the "I’m an abusive drunk" affidavit. Jean kisses him again, but to his credit he doesn't make a move since he just deceived her.
21. What happened to the press release items on Lucien looking at his self obsession and Jean wondering if Rose betrayed her? Maybe, there's a little on being obsessive, but nothing re Rose betraying Jean.
22. Next week - Matthew throws Lucien out of the station, but then there's a scene with Matthew in the Blake house where Jean and Lucien are decorating a Christmas tree. On the other hand, we don't know if the Christmas tree scene is before or after the throwing Lucien out of the station scene. Jean hands Lucien an angel to put on the tree. The camera gives a close up of it. Any significance? Jeans asks Rose if anyone else knows. Rose shakes her head no. Jean is outside near the Blake mailbox with a concerned look on her face. Uh oh, did some news of the divorce arrive? Also, there's a scene with Norm Baker (Ref.: Ep. 3.7, Room Without a View) being questioned at the station. Is he doing something bad to Lucien, or is he involved in the arson?
Glad we got the news yesterday about possibly a new station picking up TDBM because Lucien lying to Jean in this episode was a bit of a downer for me. On the other hand, this season seems to be following the same pattern as season 4. Maybe, things will start to look brighter for our favorite couple by the end of the next episode. We do have that ep. 8 kiss!
1. Patrick Tynemann emcees the debutante ball at Wendouree Grammar. Wish we'd seen more of Patrick this season, but behind-the-scene shots suggest he will make more of an appearance in 5.8 and the telemovie. Too bad it isn't because he's charged with filicide.

8 kiss!
Things I learned in Ep. 5.7: A Time for Every Purpose. Originally Broadcast October 29, 2017
1. Episode is rated M for mature audiences. It should be rated P for painful, A for angst, or TG for thank God we have the spoilers for the telemovie and the pic of Lucien and Jean kissing in ep. 8.
2. Ed tries to impress Rose with a vineyard, but would have been better off trying to change his obnoxious personality.
3. Sweet scene decorating the Christmas tree. But Lucien gets annoyed because Jean talks about one of the characters being the smartest man she knew. She adds until recently, but Lucien still doesn’t like it. Happily, these characters that Lucien and Jean get jealous of turn out to be murderers or murder victims, or in the case of the mother of the rower, just horrid.
4. The farmer’s wife is a ginger. Ballarat seems to have a disproportionate number of gingers (3 last week), Catholics, and lefties.
5. Kevin looks a bit like Charlie. Turns out he is the product of an affair, but not involving Charlie’s mysteriously dead father. (There’s more to that story, I just know it.)
6. Ned is at the crime scene – he’s a dead man. He’s scheduled to testify after the holidays about police corruption and apparently took some money under the table himself. Nice that they gave him some screen time before his neck is broken next week. I wonder how that works – more pay for speaking lines? How much does he get paid for dead body in the morgue time? Yes, I’m concerned about how Ned is going to pay his bills and his future.
7. Ed does inappropriate touching of Rose in the newsroom. Apparently, he didn’t have or failed sexual harassment training. Too bad it’s not 2017. Rose could sue him and wind up owning the Courier. Also, what kind of therapy did he get for his touching aversion problem in Ep. 3.8.
8. Jean is back in Sacred Heart arranging the altar flowers for Christmas and confessing to Father Emery. Father Emery has had a more sympathetic attitude in the last couple of appearances. Are we being set up for a last minute save – someone thinks to ask if Lucien and Mei Lin were married in a civil ceremony?
9. Who is King Barney? I googled it. Aussies: is it the souvenir king?
10. The farmer’s son attacks the green grocer and makes some bigoted comments when being questioned. This “new Australians” prejudice is a recurring theme.
11. Ed overhears Rose mention Lucien on a phone call, gets turned down for dinner by Rose in favor of Charlie, divorce story appears in the newspaper. What would Ed have done if Rose had gone out with him?
12. Newspaper story includes pics of Lucien, Mei Lin, and Jean and brings into question Lucien’s work on dozens of cases. Also mentions his hundreds of patients. Huh? We’ve seen about a dozen.
13. We find out from Rose that the divorce proceedings are scheduled in about a month’s time – not too late for a last minute save re the grounds.
14. Unarmed Lucien and Charlie confront a person with a shot gun. They are not in danger, however, because they hold up their hands to ward off any bullets. No bullet proof vests at that time, but happily Matthew mentions a police radio. Oh, and yes, Lucien has learned his lesson from the stabbing.
15. Lucien is still holding the side where he was stabbed. Still taking pain pills?
16. Jean gets the newspaper. Later, when confronting Lucien, she asks is she just the housekeeper. Is she kidding? She hasn’t acted like the housekeeper since the first episode ever. Lucien also gives Jean an out on the engagement, and she doesn’t respond.
17. Drunk Lucien reels into the station and manages to insult everyone. It’s odd he doesn’t apologize later. He’s usually quick to do so. Also odd that he’s handled a half bottle of whiskey in the past, but a little grappa has him stumbling.
18. Lucien punches out Edward, and the universe is happy. Rose gets fired. What’s the statute of limitations on sexual harassment suits?
19. Norm Baker is back, but apparently only as a red herring and to make Lucien feel guilty about discovering Baker’s daughter Anna was a murderer. It’s the father/lost daughter theme.
20. Farmer’s son says his mother would never have left his father no matter what he did. Not that he’s abusive, but is this a foreshadowing of Lucien and Jean?
21. Two people were involved in the murder. Where have we seen this before? Ep. 2.7, The Silence.
22. Poor Charlie has an awkward breakfast with Lucien and Jean. Tension, and not of the sexual kind, could have been cut with a knife. Tough when mom and dad are fighting and you’re caught in the middle.
23. A letter arrives from Mei Lin offering to do what she can to make the divorce easy. Now this happens and what do she and Jean have in mind? Mei Lin confesses adultery with Alderton?
24. Lucien tells Jean he loves her, and she doesn’t reciprocate. Jean is a little passive aggressive in this episode. Maybe that’s more punishment for Lucien than her screaming at him.
25. BTW, the dog stole the show. As always, dogs bring a smile to everyone’s face, and he helped solve the crime!
26. Can’t help but think of next week’s episode. We know they get back together. Do Matthew and/or Charlie move out of the house? Hard to live there with the scandal re the police cases. I think Lucien will resign to save everyone having to pay the price for his misbehavior and also to testify. Maybe that way the crime club can stay under one roof. But, how will Lucien and Jean make a living? Patients are already cancelling. I think Patrick will have a role in helping – maybe brokering a deal so that Lucien doesn’t get charged with assault? Jean will say I love you. Why does she get excommunicated? Because of the article – she’s giving scandal. Not something widely used in the Church.

Things I learned in Ep. 5.8: Hear the Angels Sing. Originally Broadcast November 5, 2017
1. Lake Wendouree is the scene of more than one police action. People of Ballarat, please be careful.
2. Ned arrives to meet his girl riding his pushy, memories of Danny.
3. Ned takes his girl to the pictures, but we don’t know which film. There certainly were a lot of great ones mentioned in TDBM. Just don’t make them like that anymore.
4. Alas, poor Ned, we knew him well. Maybe not that well, but we did see him a lot this season.
5. Ned’s hair on the autopsy table looks great. It’s almost as beautiful as Charlie’s.
6. Lucien arrives at the crime scene in an open neck shirt and a sweater vest under his jacket. Pretty daring.
7. In a touching moment, Matthew puts his hat over his heart when standing over dead Ned.
8. Rose sees the headline on the newsstand about a dead cop and literally runs to the station thinking the young, dead cop is Charlie. They have a scene on the bridge of sighs – spot where Mattie said good-by to her lover in ep. 3.4, By the Southern Cross. Rose has tears in her eyes, but no PDA – not even a hug. Charlie, give the girl a break. In a prop change, Charlie is drinking from a mug, not a teacup.
9. Mrs. Billie Bentley, part-time madam, complains about Munro. Her hair is great, very period correct.
10. Munro and Ned were both at the station in St. Kilda. Googled it. Beautiful place.
11. The Station has a police radio! Yay. But, it’s not all good news. Who’s listening in?
12. Patrick stops by the Blake house. Jean is outside putting Christmas bows on the fence. Does this woman ever rest? No wonder she’s so thin. (Note to self: spend more time cooking, cleaning, and gardening.)
13. Patrick apologizes to Jean and warns her about more articles. Jean says “in your paper”? Does that get Patrick thinking?
14. We see a naked man, but not the one we were hoping for.
15. Lucien finds the engagement ring Ned was planning on giving Amy. Who goes over these crime scenes? What will they do without Lucien?
16. After hitting Bill on the head, Walter Gregan escapes. But, Ned’s girl Amy lures him to Lake Wendouree. Bill punches and kicks Walter, but this time no one minds.
17. After Matthew fires Lucien. Lucien goes back inside for his medical bag. In a nice touch, Charlie and Bill both stand as he’s leaving.
18. Lucien goes to the club. Cec apparently tipped him off that Munro is there. Lucien and Munro have a relatively cordial conversation, which is the kiss of death for Munro. Munro says Ballarat is a dangerous town. Yeah, we know. In an ironic twist of fate, Munro dies saving Blake’s life. There’s no scene of Jean learning Lucien was almost killed. Guess it’s a given now.
19. Matthew lets Lucien observe Munro’s autopsy, and in an uncharacteristic move, Lucien steals evidence. Just kidding. It’s vintage Lucien.
20. Billie Bentley calls Matthew by his first name and seems somewhat familiar. Hmm…has Matthew been a customer?
21. Jean goes to the Church and tells Father Emery she’s leaving. He tells her to reconsider. We all say, “oh, no, please don’t.” Happily, she agrees with us
22. Charlie goes to the morgue looking for Munro’s notebook. The shadowy figure appears, and Charlie gets hit in the head. Ballarat needs a concussion specialist.
23. Lucien and Nancy Drew, uh Rose, go through Munro’s notebook and figure out the culprit. In an echo of when Lucien quit his job in 3.6, Women and Children, the culprit is going after Lucien and his friends.
24. Jean has a lovely scene at Christopher’s grave, telling him how much she loved him and he was enough for her. (Ref. ep. 3.2, My Brother’s Keeper.)
25. The big scene – Norm Baker takes Jean by gunpoint to his daughters’ graves. Having figured it out, Lucien rushes to the cemetery. He tries to convince Norm not to kill Jean. Lucien and Jean hold hands throughout. Jean steps in front of Lucien and says her life will be over without Lucien. Not, “I love you,” but close enough. Apparently, Jean has picked up this risky behavior from Lucien. Matthew appears with a gun – apparently Rose called him. Lucien takes responsibility for hurting Norm. I’m sorry, I still don’t get that.
26. Wrap up at the precinct. Ed arrives. Charlie steps up and tells him off – don’t come after my friends – again echo of ep. 3.6 when Lucien quit to protect Charlie and Alice. Lucien and Matthew exchange looks – our boy has grown up. Patrick fires Ed (maybe after thinking over what Jean said?) and offers to rehire Rose.
27. Fade to Christmas at the Blake house. Did anyone notice the brass plaque outside? Is the wording new? It’s definitely not the same as the wording on the plaque at the end of the driveway in ep. 1.10.
28. Bill is at the Blake’s! Apparently, he’s been adopted as well. Please, please, don’t have him move in.
29. Lucien is playing Silent Night on the piano. Sounds beautiful and a good choice budget wise – royalty free music + something more festive would have seemed inappropriate given that Ned probably isn’t buried yet.
30. Rose’s present to Charlie says on the card “Dear Charlie” and “Love, Rose.” Aahh. Their relationship seems to have taken a turn.
31. Lucien gives Jean earrings. A little unimaginative, but practical. She can cash them in to bail him out in some future episode.
32. Save the Date! Jean’s present to Lucien is a calendar with the wedding date circled – March 25, 1961. Interesting that Jean can make unilateral decisions. She’s also going to start inviting people to the wedding. These two like to get ahead of themselves- engaged while he’s still legally married and now setting a date and inviting people. Oh, well. Lucien thinks it’s the best present ever, and so do we!
This episode wraps up a lot of storylines and has some nice recurring themes. What’s left for the telemovie – three murders, two weddings, and a funeral! And, Lucien’s redemption and return as police surgeon. Any guesses as to how that happens? Will we see the wedding? What will be revealed about Lucien’s father?
