Because this is Valentine’s week, I thought it would be fun to discuss Lucien and Jean’s romance – as if we need an excuse! I was thinking about all the times Lucien and Jean choose to stay – to stick it out and make their relationship work. For me, it started with Episode 1.2 when Jean applies for a job with the Royal Cross Hotel. After pretending to be indifferent and saying it is her business, Lucien asks her to remain in the house even if she gets the job. He wants her to help him - a blind eye, a good talking to from time to tiime. She agrees. At the end, when she tells him she doesn’t expect to get the job, he tears up and says he's rather glad. What times do you remember when they choose to stay?

I love that scene. Right from the start we can see that Lucien and Jean are perfectly suited. She seems to know what he is thinking even if he can't quite express it. Another time she could have left is when Lucien got arrested after insulting the British consulate and accidentally punching Matthew. This was another example of her giving him a stern talking to and he listened. Another example is the time he resigned in disgrace from the hospital board. She was furious with him and did leave overnight but came back. Where did she go when she left?

Jan - the great mystery of where she went after she left the house in ep. 1.10!

There is one very short moment towards final of 'Room Without A View' - when Jean has a drink of whisky - for courage to tell Lucien, yes, she is leaving the next day for Adelaide. As she leaves the room, she pauses , Lucien is silent. She continues toward her room. No words, but very telling.

I remember that scene. I hadn’t thought much about the way Jean hesitated to give him a chance to say something. I do remember the look on his face as he realized she was really leaving and he couldn’t find the right words. The TDBM folks really know how to build tension!

Hi Joanne, yes, Lucien was 'gutted'. I admire the way they convey their - for the most part - hidden emotions. Worth 10 pages of script, & so genuinely portrayed.

My favorite scene is when Jean confronts Lucien about filing for divorce on grounds of drunkenness. She is furious and gutted simultaneously. She is angry enough to "put a knot on his head" and goes to bed. She is as crushed as she could possibly be, the betrayal jumps off the screen. But Jean lives him unconditionally. She chooses to stay, knowing life will never be easy for them.
